Oscar Thoughts 2 - Individual Awards

Well, i will not be able to do justice here as well as I havent seen some of the performances of the favorites in these categories, and with little time on hand and being a busy person, i wont be able to.

Lets start with Best Actor.

Demian Bichir for A Better Life, sorry i havent seen the film, if any of you have and liked it and the acting and think it is better than any of the others on this list, please fill me in by posting below.

George Clooney always does a George Clooney. Hell, in the ridiculous Batman & Robin you could almost hear the other cast say - 'It's the Clooney' instead of 'It's the Batman'. But he always gets nominated doesnt he? Michael Clayton, Up in the Air & now The Descendents. And guess what, he is a favorite this time! Well, i might disagree with him being THE favorite, but his performance is one that makes the character believable. Matt King is the second parent his kids go to and his wife is now in a coma, and he comes to know his wife cheated on him and he has a hell of a lot on his plate to deal with, including considering whether to sell off a large piece of land on an Hawaiian island. By no means is it an easy role to play but Clooney is so much at ease. For the first time i felt his nomination was worth it and i think he could even win the god damn thing.

Brad Pitt for Moneyball? Naaah.. As i said in my earlier post, Moneyball & the acting is very good, just that. I dont think Brad Pitt deserved a nomination here. Oh it is a fine performance, but Ryan Gosling for the brilliant Drive and Leonardo DiCaprio's transformation into J Edgar Hoover were much more worthy. I would put Gosling's role in Drive on par with another similar role, a role which garnered Gary Oldman his first (yes!) Oscar nomination for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Both roles are key, are of the main characters in their respective films.

And yet both characters have less to speak. Both are thinkers, both trying to figure out the next move, Gosling his own and Oldman the others.

And talking about speaking less, well this year's front-runner spoke just one line in his film - i hope that wasnt a spoiler. It is a great film and Jean Dujardin was perfectly cast. It is a blend of reticence and expression. It is a tough ask to play out and act out roles while mouthing dialogues, but the effortless execution of expression makes this as easy to understand as any spoken film, plus leaves you as interested. He won the Best Actor award at Cannes, and the Best Actor - Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes so he should be favorite, but the Oscars tend to throw up surprises.
